Great Walking Routes Near Edinburgh
When a wander down the Royal Mile just won’t cut it, or a Sunday stroll up Arthur’s Seat is becoming a habit, take a hike on these alternative walking routes in the Edinburgh area:
The Water of Leith
Follow the route of the river as it passes through the heart of Edinburgh. A 12 ¾ mile ramble will take you through the old watermill gorge at Dean Village. Further on, and you’ll be immersed in Scotland’s wildlife in the woodlands of New Town.
A picturesque stroll, the Water eventually meets the sea in Leith’s docklands area.
Cramond Island
We all love a bit of the seaside, don’t we? Discover Edinburgh’s very own with an amble along the sands at Cramond.
When the tide is down, head on over to the offshore island and check out the WW2 era fortifications built here to defend against submarine attacks.
Make sure you know the tide times before heading off, otherwise you’ll be camping on the North Sea island overnight.
The Union Canal
Connecting to the Water of Leith, the ever-popular Union Canal is perfect for a Sunday walk. The full route links Edinburgh with Falkirk and was constructed to transport coal into the capital.
The Slateford Aqueduct is an impressive sight, the 150m structure carries the canal over the river as it winds its way through Edinburgh.
This quiet stretch of water is a great spot to meander along and watch the world go by.
Figgate Park
Nature lovers should head over to Figgate Park in the east of the city. With planted reed beds, rolling meadows and dense woodland, this little gem is a haven for local wildlife in the heart of Edinburgh.
We suggest following the wooden walkway along the waterside for the best views of the surrounding park and gardens.
Pentlands
Head south from the city and you’ll find yourself in the sweeping expanse of Pentland Hills. True Scottish countryside, these rolling peaks are popular with hikers and bikers.
Be sure to wrap up warm, and explore the prehistoric ruins at Castlelaw, which is said to have a history stretching back to the pre-Roman era.
