A Brief History of Mother’s Day https://www.citi-wise.com/uk/gigs-and-events/a-brief-history-of-mothers-day/ Wed, 20 Mar 2019 16:38:19 +0000 https://www.citi-wise.com/?p=41392 The post A Brief History of Mother’s Day appeared first on Citi-Wise.

]]>

An ode to mothering figures everywhere, Mother’s Day is a firm fixture on the UK calendar; a day where we all rush to grab greetings cards, daffodils and boxes of chocolates. Though, have you ever wondered where this tradition started?

Unlike many of the Mother’s Day traditions the world over, the UK iteration of the family festival can be traced back to a date before the US version came into fashion.

Taking place on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter, Mothering Sunday has been around for hundreds of years.

Traditionally a Christian holiday, the original Mothering Sunday was a universal day-off in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was a day when entire families, especially those working as servants or labourers with busy schedules, would get together to visit their “Mother Church”.

The Mother Church was usually the one in which you were baptised or at least the largest in the area. As part of the ceremonies, young children would pick flowers on the way to church to present to their own mothers. Over time, this small aspect of the day became an integral part, with the holiday transforming into a day to celebrate all things “Mum”.

During the 1920s, Mother’s Day came back into fashion thanks to the efforts of Anna Jarvis in the US and Constance Penswick-Smith in the UK. Both women felt a celebration of our mothering figures was in order.

Penswick-Smith launched the Mothering Sunday Movement and in 1921, penned a book advocating for the revival of the festival.

Over the next 20 years, the holiday became increasingly commercialised, like many of the events throughout the calendar.

These days, the weekend event represents one of the leading days for flower sales in the UK, and the third highest holiday for greeting’s card sales.

The streets of Edinburgh will once again be transformed into a bonanza of all things theatre and performance this Spring, as the annual International Children’s Festival returns for a 30th anniversary year.

This year’s festivities brings together fifteen productions from across the globe, from Scotland to Australia.

An action-packed calendar celebrates the world of theatre and dance, with events running from 25 May to 2 June 2019.

“Our 30th-anniversary programme promises to be another spectacular one for the Festival,” said Festival Director Noel Jordan.

“This year, families in Scotland will again have a unique opportunity to see some of the world’s best theatre and dance specifically created for young people. You can go on a voyage from a retro kitchen into outer space with the first female astronaut, or marvel at the determination of triplet sisters as they journey separately around the globe. Whatever your choice, you can be confident the shows will be diverse, compelling and visually stunning. Shows that will make children laugh, gasp and cry while encouraging them to be critical thinkers with curious minds.”

Surprise Mum with something other than a Milkbox and some John Lewis vouchers this Mother’s Day.

Check out these top restaurants for a Mother’s Day dinner in the Royal Borough:

Marmara Restaurant

Need a Turkish food fix this Mother’s Day? Let’s be honest, who doesn’t? Falafel wraps and tabbouleh salads are in this Spring and Windsor’s Marmara serves up some of the best in the Royal Borough.

Healthy, wholesome and the perfect spot for a laid-back Mother’s Day lunch that offers something a little different to the standard Sunday carvery.

1DG, 5 Queen Anne’s Court, Peascod St, Windsor, SL4 1DH (marmara)

Windsor Grill

If you’re after something a tad more meat-based than deep-fried chickpeas, then look no further than Windsor Grill. Steaks of all tenderness and taste are the order of the day at this elegant eatery.

Located within the shadow of Windsor Castle, there is also an extensive list of seafood if steak isn’t your jam.

One disclaimer though, you’ll have to make this one an early Mother’s Day treat as Windsor Grill is closed on a Sunday.

Italian Steakhouse

Windsor clearly has a thing for steakhouses, here’s another stellar member of the Royal Borough’s grilling scene.

A relatively new addition, Italian Steakhouse comes from the same team behind the popular Viva L’Italia. A mighty grill menu ranges from burgers and steaks to spicy chicken and lamb chops, all sprinkled with the flavours and fancies of Southern Italy.

The Alma

A classic pub for a classic Mother’s Day vibe. The Alma is kitted out in a rustic get-up, with a laid-back, casual dining atmosphere. The grub is traditional British boozer fare cooked up to a sumptuous standard.

We recommend the battered haddock and chips, or the sweet potato and chickpea curry for you veggies out there.

Enzo’s

There’s something quite cosy and charming about a proper Italian restaurant, perhaps it’s the heaped portions of fresh pasta, or the crispy stonebaked pizzas just from the oven?

You’ll find all of that, and more, at Enzo’s, which has become something of a Windsor establishment in its years of business.

The George Inn

Located in historic Eton, The George Inn has a history dating back to 1750. A little slice of history, this cosy spot is the first pub for the Windsor & Eton Brewery.

Much of the menu is locally-sourced and British-themed, with the Guardsman Ale pie being the star of the show.

Palmieri’s

A family-run spot, Palmieri’s inclusion in this list should come as no surprise to any foodie in Maidenhead. Gourmet Italian meets greasy spoon fry-up joint this decade-old institution can count the likes of former Manchester City star Mario Balotelli amongst its customers.

Another that doesn’t open on a Sunday (the good food warrants giving it a place here), so you may have to settle for a pre-Mum’s Day meal.

The Beehive

Nestled in the picturesque village of White Waltham, the much-lauded Beehive is the work of TV chef mastermind Dominic Chapman.

A little on the pricier side, though the extra moolah should be a welcome trade-off for the sheer quality of the nosh here.

We recommend the pan-fried Sea Bream with Tarka Dhal.

An award-winning Indian curry house in the traditional vein of white tablecloths and neon lighting. In a city packed with South-Asian restaurants, it should come as high praise that Turmeric Gold is head-and-shoulders above much of the rest.

A little on the pricey side, but you’re paying for delicious mountains of Indian classics. A must for Mum’s with a passion for spice.

Why not treat Mum to something more than a handful of Daffodils from the supermarket and whatever chocolate is on offer this Mother’s Day? Southend has a great selection of restaurants for all tastes and budgets.

Here are our top restaurants to take Mum to for a Mother’s Day dinner in Southend:

Route5 Italian Restaurant & Cocktail Bar

An Italian restaurant by trade, that just so happens to have some of the best cocktails in town.

There’s a huge menu, with some Italian style treats thrown in. The food is reasonably priced to boot, so you can enjoy some fresh pasta with your classic negroni cocktail.

You just can’t go wrong with a mountain of cheesy nachos with a combo of toppings for just under £14. Perfect for a Mother’s Day dinner in Southend.

Syrtaki Restaurant

A sleek and sophisticated Greek restaurant, Syrtaki drops a mishmash of Mediterranean influences on the Southend restaurant scene.

Naturally then, you can expect plenty from the charcoal grill; from lamb kebabs to charcoal sea bream. Though the cuisine is majorly meat-infused, there are plenty of salads and mezze nibbles for those looking for something more plant-based.

You can probably score a decent two-course meal for around £25 a head, with options ranging from pan-roasted cod loin to grilled veg and field mushrooms.

Being a bistro, you best swing by if you like your meat dishes.

Cucina

So, we cheated a little as Cucina is technically (well, not even technically) in nearby Leigh-on-Sea. That said, it’s worth the extra five minutes in the car. First opened in 2013, this swanky night-spot has some of the best Italian grub this side of Sicily.

Specialising in southern Italian and Sicilian style cooking, the menu is packed with sumptuous chicken dishes, alongside all the usual pizza and pasta fare you’d expect from this type of joint.

Tasty, and easy on the wallet too. What’s not to love?

Il Pescatore is an Italian restaurant packed with passed-down-through-the-family recipes and fresh, simple ingredients.

A decently sized pizza will set you back £11.95, though you’ll be hard pressed to see the entire thing off.

Why not treat Mum to something more than a handful of Daffodils from the supermarket and whatever chocolate is on offer this Mother’s Day? Southend has a great selection of restaurants for all tastes and budgets.

Here are our top restaurants to take Mum to for a Mother’s Day dinner in Edinburgh:

Forage & Chatter

Impress your Mum with some traditional Scottish fare at Forage & Chatter. Alongside the decent craic (the chatter), is a range of locally-sourced (and often foraged) classical grub.

Top-end of the price range admittedly, but you are paying for good quality nosh. The wild halibut, spelt, chanterelles and sea veg is a must for Mother’s Day in Edinburgh.

Harvey Nichols Forth Floor Restaurant & Brasserie

You may be used to popping into Harvey N’s for a work shirt or a designer bag, but head up to the fourth floor and you’ve got a wealth of fancy eating options to take Mum to.

With views over St Andrew Square, the brasserie-bar is the best of the bunch. With a pan-Europe meets traditional British menu and a healthy selection of cocktails for a liquid-fuelled brunch, it’s a must for those looking for a little bit of pizzaz.

You can always pop downstairs for the perfume later.

A buzzing joint on South Clerk Street that is ideal for those that want to nibble away the afternoon. Sonder’s name comes from the noun, meaning “the realisation that each passerby is a living a life as vivid and complex as your own.

Pretty deep huh?

The menu is short and sweet. and utilises the best of fresh, seasonal Scottish produce.

Edinburgh’s beauty is both staggering and unique – but this city is far more than just a pretty face. Take a closer look and there’s much more to discover in Scotland’s capital.

From the rich – and sometimes hidden – history that surrounds your every step, to the wealth of lush walking spaces peppered around the city centre, Edinburgh continually surprises and inspires. From the top of Arthur’s Seat, to the bottom of the Royal Mile; there is nowhere quite like “Auld Reekie”.

Start the day right

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and luckily, Edinburgh is rife with options. The Scottish capital is a city best explored on foot so you’ll be wanting to fill up with something hearty and wholesome.

Kickstart your day with an injection of caffeine at one of Edinburgh’s many hip and happening coffee hubs. Why not check out this list of our favourites in the city?

Discover the birthplace of Harry Potter at The Elephant House Ltd, or swing by Scotland’s first roastery at Artisan Coffee. If you fancy something a bit heavier, why not find a spot for a traditional Scottish breakfast; black pudding and all.

Morning exploring

Hit the pavements and begin your exploration of Edinburgh with a wander down the Royal Mile. The capital’s most iconic street, the ‘Mile’ isn’t actually a mile at all and actually clocks in at just over 1000m, a traditional Scot’s Mile.

Before you hit the Castle, pop into Princes Street Gardens to admire the floral displays and planted landscapes. Here, you’ll find the 61.11m high Scott Monument.

This instantly recognisable piece of Edinburgh’s architecture is the world’s largest literary monument and can be climbed for some inspiring views of the Old Town area.

From here, head on over to Edinburgh Castle. Get to the fortress early to beat those tourist crowds. Perched atop an extinct volcano, the looming fortifications of this 12th-century monument form the city’s premier attraction.

The most besieged castle in the British Isles, the Castle boasts a tumultuous history. Spend at least an hour exploring the crooks and crannies of this ancient Scottish bastion.

Take to the road again and continue down the ‘Mile towards Holyrood Palace, the official Scottish residence of the British royal family. The Queen spends at least one week a year at Holyrood, with the 17th century Palace open to the public for the rest of the year.

There is plenty to see along the ‘Mile, from the impressive steeples of St Giles Cathedral, the Church of Scotland’s most important religious site, to Outlook Tower, home of the interactive Camera Obscura museum.

Before taking a break for lunch, be sure to get a snap of the bustling ‘Mile with the peak of Arthur’s Seat, Edinburgh’s extinct volcano, rising up in the background.

Lazy lunch

After all that exploring, it’s time to refuel at one of Edinburgh’s many trendy and tasty restaurants. There is plenty for all tastes in the Scottish capital. Perhaps swing by Saboteur for fiery East-Asian cuisine? Or head to the swanky Forage & Chatter for a take on traditional Scottish fare?

Check out some of our favourite places to eat on a budget here, or here for those veggie and vegan folk out there.

Afternoon adventures

Having explored Edinburgh’s rich Old Town, it’s time to cross into the New. Designed in the 18th century, this span of neo-classical and Georgian architecture is ideal for a lazy afternoon wander.

Be sure to spot Greyfriars Bobby as you cross over into New Town. The statue of the little dog is one of the city’s most recognisable icons, honouring the legend of the loyal pup who supposedly guarded his master’s grave for 14 years.

You’ll find many of Edinburgh’s best museums amongst the streets of New Town.

If you fancy a little hike, take the easy climb up Calton Hill for impressive views of the capital’s skyline. You’ll also find “Edinburgh’s Disgrace” up here. The National Monument of Scotland, to give it its correct name, was modelled on the Greek Pantheon but was never finished.

Delicious dinner options

You’ve earnt a delicious dinner after all this exploring, and luckily Edinburgh has an abundance of options. Drop by The Honours for fine dining with a difference, or enjoy Neopolitan-inspired seafood at Locanda de Gusti. Check out some more of our favourites here.

Evening extravaganza

No evening in Scotland would be complete without sampling the nation’s beloved drink: whisky. Settle in for a dram at one of Edinburgh’s many whisky bars. Or, if you fancy something a little different, head to the prohibition-styled Panda & Sons for a cocktail with a difference.
